Prepackaged ice - an unnecessary luxury that feeds egos and landfills

We understand some people worry about water sanitation when they travel, in which case they're likely to be firm believers in drinking bottled water (or better yet, alcohol). But in developed countries where the tap water is perfectly safe to drink, we find bottled water to be no more than a guilty pleasure.

Just when we thought people were finally beginning to understand the impacts of such excesses, we came across pre-packaged ice cubes made from spring water imported from New Zealand into Hong Kong's supermarkets. If the public isn’t foolish enough about avoiding tap water (we drink it when we can), this is definitely feeding into their paranoia, and certainly into our landfills. After all, ice, in and of itself, is a luxury we should be able to live without.
